Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics
in Norwalk, CT
What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?
Dentists and orthodontists both go to dental school, but after graduating, orthodontists go on to receive two to three additional years of education and training that focuses on correcting misaligned bites and crooked teeth. Braces and other orthodontic treatments are our specialty—it’s all we do and we do it well!
Is it better to get Invisalign from a dentist or an orthodontist?
It’s always better to get Invisalign from an orthodontist. While a dentist may provide Invisalign to a few dozen patients a year, we see patients for Invisalign on a daily basis. Because we work with the system more, we know its capabilities—and its limitations—better. Our advanced training and knowledge means we don’t rely on computer algorithms to plan your treatment for us. Instead, Dr. Wong plans out the movements of your teeth personally for optimal results.
What is two-phase orthodontic treatment?
Two-phase orthodontic treatment divides your child’s treatment into two phases, starting with interceptive orthodontics. Not all children need this first phase of treatment, but when they do, we use specialized devices that help shape the jaw and make room for adult teeth to emerge. The second phase of treatment begins several years later, once all or most of the adult teeth have erupted.
Are braces worth it?
Absolutely! Braces go far beyond aesthetic improvements. Straight teeth are easier to clean, a property aligned jaw can prevent headaches and chipped teeth, and you’ll be more confident about your appearance when you have a beautiful smile that you feel good about showing to the world.
Do braces change your face?
One of the lesser known benefits of braces is that they can change your facial shape. The lower half of your face is defined by your jaw; when the jaw is misaligned, it can impact your profile and your facial symmetry. Braces will improve your profile and make your facial features more balanced.
Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?
You’re never too old to get braces! We’ve provided braces to patients of all ages. If you’re hesitant about having a mouth full of metal, you’ll be happy to know that there are several alternatives to traditional metal braces these days. While you may feel self-conscious about your teeth, even more important is correcting your bite issues to improve your oral health, relieve TMJ pain, and eliminate the chronic headaches that can be caused by jaw misalignment.
