Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics
What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?
Dentists and orthodontists have a lot in common—both graduate from dental school with a DMD or DDS degree and strive to help their patients achieve optimal oral health. The key difference is that orthodontists receive up to three years of additional training and education on the movement of teeth and the correction of facial irregularities and growth issues. In other words, orthodontists are specialists who have more knowledge and experience when it comes to braces, Invisalign, and other orthodontic treatments.
What is a good age to get braces?
Every patient is unique, but generally speaking, we will wait until a child has lost all of their primary teeth before considering braces. Other than that, there are no age limits—you are never too old to achieve the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted!
How long will braces take?
On average, braces take 24 months, but as with all averages, there are outliers—some patients complete their treatment much earlier, while a small minority of patients require more than 24 months. We offer AcceleDent technology to speed up orthodontic treatment, but other than this, the best way to optimize your treatment time is to make sure you never miss an appointment and call us right away if a bracket breaks off, a wire becomes loose, or you lose an elastic.
Is Invisalign worth getting?
Yes, Invisalign is worth getting. Many adults and teens feel self-conscious about the idea of getting metal braces and Invisalign offers a more discreet alternative. It’s also important to note that the benefits of Invisalign go beyond cosmetic—straighter teeth are healthier teeth, and a proper bite can save you from serious dental issues down the road.
What does interceptive orthodontics mean?
Interceptive orthodontics influences proper growth in the jaw while it is still developing instead of waiting for growth issues to occur and correcting them later. With interceptive orthodontics, your child’s time in braces during their teens can be shortened and occasionally eliminated.
